Donating blood is an easy and practical way to save lives and benefit your community. The blood collected at these drives can be used in a number of different treatments, including for patients with cancer, burns, sickle-cell disease, chronic illness, and more.
While the volume of donations is important, one of the most important parts of a blood drive is to diversify the types of blood collected. Some blood types are incredibly rare and it is absolutely critical that patients are given a compatible type during treatment.
Illinois House Republicans are making it easier to donate by bringing dozens of blood drives into the community every year. State Representative Jackie Haas is one member committed to making these drives more accessible for her constituents.
“Hosting a blood drive is such a simple and easy way to save lives in our own community,” said Rep. Haas. “That is why my office consistently hosts blood drives throughout the 79th District. Thanks to the generosity of my constituents, we’ve hosted dozens of these events since I was elected and helped provide lifesaving blood to those who need it most.”
For those who have not previously donated, it may seem intimidating. But the process for donors is streamlined and easy: show up, check in, donate, and get back to your day. The actual blood draw itself is usually under 15 minutes, followed by a short rest and a snack.
If you’ve donated before, thank you for making it part of your routine. If you haven’t, consider scheduling an appointment at the next drive in your area. One hour or less of your time can translate into saving the life of someone in your community. Another member of the Illinois House Republican Caucus, State Representative Jed Davis, also hosts blood drives with the goal of saving lives in his area.
“Giving back to your community doesn’t always need to be a huge gesture,” said Rep. Davis. “Some of the most important ways to give back, such as donating blood, require only a little bit of free time and a willingness to help others. I encourage Illinoisans who are able to donate blood when they have the opportunity to keep our blood banks stocked and to save lives!”
Thank you to the incredible community-based blood drive partners, such as the American Red Cross, Versiti Blood Center of Illinois, ImpactLife, Community Blood Center, and more. Your work, and the work of dedicated healthcare professionals statewide, are appreciated!
