Each summer, the Office of the House Republican Leader sponsors a summer internship program for aspiring high school and college students. Unlike many other summer internships, the House Republican internship includes an education program designed to expose interns to different career opportunities in the General Assembly and government service.
While interns may be assigned to a State Representative’s District Office or a division within the House Republican Caucus, the education program allows them to participate in weekly activities that include presentations and exercises hosted by experts on the House Republican staff.
This summer, interns had the opportunity to take deep dives into policy matters, such as how the Research and Appropriations department specializes in specific policy areas, how legislation is drafted, and how the House Clerk and House Rules play a fundamental role in the process. The interns then had the opportunity to put this new knowledge to work by drafting House Resolutions, offering an analysis of the House Rules, and presenting their own suggestions for changing the Rules.
Likewise, interns participated in firsthand activities about the public relations process, utilizing digital media and developing constituent outreach programs to help Representatives engage with and provide services to their constituents. Interns were able to draft press releases, create content for use on social media platforms, and help locate venues for events.
Many of the projects developed by interns during the education program were then utilized by House Republican staff.
