On July 4, 2026, our nation will mark a once-in-a-generation milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With just 250 days to go, communities across Illinois and the country are preparing to honor America’s founding principles and the people who have shaped our shared story.
The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission—known as America250—is leading the charge with initiatives designed to engage every American. Their expanded “America’s Field Trip” contest is offering students behind-the-scenes experiences at historic sites, museums, and cultural institutions. The goal: inspire the next generation to connect with our nation’s history in meaningful ways.
The Commission has also launched a nationwide call for community participation, encouraging local governments, schools, and civic organizations to plan events that reflect the diversity and resilience of the American experience. From reenactments and essay contests to concerts and commemorative exhibits, the 250th anniversary is being designed as a celebration for all.
Major brands are also stepping up. The Walt Disney Company recently announced “Disney Celebrates America,” a company-wide tribute featuring immersive experiences, patriotic programming, and a $2.5 million donation to Blue Star Families. Highlights include a reimagined “Soarin’ Across America” attraction at EPCOT and a 24-hour broadcast on July 4, 2026.
According to Florida Today, Disney’s celebration will begin on Veterans Day 2025 and culminate with special fireworks and storytelling events across its parks and platforms.
For history buffs and travelers, Past Lane Travels has released “250 Places to Visit for the 250th”—a curated guide spotlighting patriotic destinations across the country. From Gettysburg to Galena, Americans are being encouraged to walk in the footsteps of those who built our republic. The guide includes Revolutionary War battlefields, presidential homes, and iconic landmarks that shaped the nation’s journey. It’s a reminder that history isn’t just found in textbooks—it’s etched into the places we live, work, and visit.
In addition to travel and tourism, America250 is investing in educational outreach. The Commission has partnered with national organizations to develop classroom-ready materials that help students explore the founding era, constitutional principles, and civic responsibility. These resources are available to teachers through America250’s Educator Portal, and include lesson plans, primary source documents, and interactive activities.
Illinois schools are encouraged to incorporate these materials into their 2025–2026 curriculum, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen civics education and historical literacy. Local historical societies are also being invited to submit archival content and oral histories to the national archive, ensuring that Illinois voices are part of the commemorative record.
Here in Illinois, local leaders are exploring ways to join the national celebration. From historic reenactments in Springfield to patriotic parades in small towns, the Land of Lincoln is uniquely positioned to honor America’s founding and its enduring legacy.
State and local officials are working with museums, veterans’ groups, and educators to develop programming that reflects Illinois’ contributions to American history—from Abraham Lincoln’s leadership to the state’s role in shaping the modern Midwest. Schools are encouraged to incorporate civics and history into their 2025–2026 curriculum, aligning with national themes of unity, liberty, and progress.
Illinois’ own bicentennial in 2018 offers a blueprint for success. That year, communities across the state hosted over 1,000 events, including traveling exhibits, youth contests, and legacy projects. Many of the same organizers are now involved in planning for America250, applying lessons learned to ensure broad participation and lasting impact.
The Illinois State Historical Society and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum are expected to play key roles, offering programming that connects national themes to local stories. Legislators and municipal leaders are also exploring ways to support community grants and public-private partnerships that make participation accessible statewide.
The 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding is more than a date—it’s a chance to reflect on our shared values, honor our history, and recommit to the principles that unite us. With 250 days to go, the excitement is building—and Illinois is ready to lead the way.
As the countdown continues, Illinoisans are encouraged to visit America250.org for updates, educational resources, and opportunities to get involved. Whether through classroom activities, community events, or travel to historic sites, every citizen has a role to play in commemorating this milestone.
