Your Illinois gift guide to shopping local for Mother's Day

With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to shop local when picking the perfect gift for Mom or Grandma.

Illinois is home to many incredible companies that offer great products and services to Illinoisans, across the country, and even globally. For those who have waited to shop, below is a Mother’s Day gift guide to shopping for Illinois-made products this year.

For moms that like to cook and bake, check out Janie’s Mill in Ashkum. The small town along I-57 in State Rep. Jason Bunting’s district is a farm to table establishment, selling organic milled products and grains, including various flours, cooking and baking supplies, cookbooks, and meal kits. The Wilken Family are farmers in Iroquois County, which is situated on the eastern side of the state and wanted to provide the same grain options they had been selling to those in their area and began their operation in 2017.

For moms that enjoy sweet treats, The Chocolate Affair in Highland is a great choice. This small southern Illinois shop, located in Rep. Charlie Meier’s district, offers handmade chocolates, seasonal candies, truffles, and even sugar free options. Owned and operated by Jennifer Flath Libbra, the establishment runs a storefront store Monday-Saturday and a 24/7 online store and free delivery to those in the Highland area.

For a salty snack, Del’s Popcorn is a long-standing popcorn staple. Created in 1934 in Decatur, which sits in Rep. Regan Deering’s district, young entrepreneur John Baldwin opened his first store. The company has now grown to host locations in Springfield and Mt. Zion, as well as an online presence. Del’s sells various popcorn flavors including seasoned, caramel, cheese, and vanilla candy coated. On their website, they have a tab specific for Mother’s Day, and sell other snacks like fudge, nuts, and brittle.

While some moms prefer cooking and sweet treats, others prefer candles and soaps. In Champaign, situated in Rep. Brandun Schweizer’s district, Fire Doll is a health-conscious candle company that makes natural candles. Kayla Brown founded her company while in nursing school and began making soy and beeswax candles that still smelled good but did not upset her asthma. Her company has grown to sell various candles, bath bombs, bath kits, and oils, as well as candle making workshops. Fire Doll studio has a storefront on Main Street and an online shop.

In north-eastern Illinois, MION Artisan Soap Co. specializes in soaps, bath and skincare products. With storefronts in LaGrange, St. Charles, and Wheaton, and an online shop, the Nedelea Family started the business after their daughter was diagnosed with eczema. MION sells skincare for the whole family, including pets, takes custom orders, and runs a blog detailing what is best used in various seasons and for different skin types and goals.

For moms that say they don’t want anything, visiting a local florist is a classic choice. Phillip’s in the Chicagoland area, Abbot’s Florist in eastern Illinois, The Flower Factor in western Illinois, and Etcetera Flowers & Gifts are all great options to get a fresh bouquet delivered.
