On January 5, 2014, Illinois residents began applying for concealed carry permits. Below is Q&A to help you understand where concealed weapons can be carried and where they are prohibited.

Am I permitted to carry a concealed firearm while going out to dinner?
Yes and No. Concealed carry is prohibited at restaurants that make more than 50% of their gross income from the sale of alcohol. These restaurant owners will need to make it clear to patrons that concealed carry is prohibited in their establishments.

Additionally, all other private businesses including restaurants can decide whether to allow concealed carry.

Am I permitted  to carry a concealed firearm when visiting museums and other tourist attractions?
No. Concealed carry is prohibited inside museums, zoos, casinos and amusement parts.

However, you are allowed to store an unloaded firearm in your car's glove compartment, trunk or locked case while in the parking lot of these attractions.

Am I permitted to carry a concealed firearm at parks and playgrounds?
No. Firearms are not permitted on playgrounds or at parks.

However, concealed carry is allowed on bike paths that pass through public parks, and in county forest preserves with the exception for the Cook County Forest Preserve.

Am I permitted to carry a concealed firearm while going for a walk or a bike ride?
Yes. Concealed carry is permitted while walking or riding a bike on a public sidewalk.

Am I permitted to carry a concealed firearm in my vehicle?
Yes. Transporting a concealed firearm is allowed in a private vehicle with the permission of the vehicle's owner.

Am I  permitted to carry a firearm in a school or on school grounds?
No. Concealed carry is not permitted in schools or universities. Universities have some authority to set rules.

However, you are allowed to store an unloaded firearm in your car's glove compartment, trunk or locked case while in the parking lot.

Am I permitted to carry a concealed firearm in private businesses, including retail stores and malls?
Yes and No. Private businesses and mall managment can decide whether to allow concealed carry.   They must post signs if concealed carry is not permitted.
