Who am I? Popeye the Sailor Man!
Since making his first appearance in the Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929,
Popeye has appeared in cartoon shorts, movies, advertisements and video games,
just to name a few. In 2002, TV Guide ranked the Chester native #20 on its list of the 50
Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time. While creating characters for the
strip, E.Z. Segar is said to have based many of them on figures he knew from
his time living in the community on the Mississippi River.
